Volleyball Kicks Off 2014 Season With Three Matches At UNLV Invitational This Weekend

Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team kicks off the 2014 season at the UNLV Invitational on August 29-31. The Highlanders get things underway with a 1:30 pm PT match against Western Kentucky on Friday before playing the host Rebels on Saturday at 11 am, and on Sunday at noon.
UCR welcomes back nine letter winners from a year ago, and adds six freshman and one transfer to the roster.
This will be the second meeting between the Highlanders and Hilltoppers in program history, with WKU earning a three-set victory back in 2006 (box score).
UC Riverside is 1-2 all-time against UNLV, with the Rebels claiming the last two wins.

GAME NOTES
BLUE AND GOLD DIGGER
Sophomore Maddie Hubbell ranked fourth in the Big West in digs per set last season with 3.93.
LET THERE BE HEIGHT!
Of the seven newcomers to the Highlanders 2014 squad, three are taller than 6-feet, pushing UCR's roster to seven girls above 5-10.
KILLER INSTINCT
Junior Ashley Cox finished the 2013 season ranked eighth in the Big West Conference in kills per set at 3.07.
GENERAL PATTON
UC Riverside is in its second season under new head coach Michelle Patton. Patton comes to the Highlanders following five seasons at San Francisco State, where she took over a program that lay dormant for four years (2004-07). The Gators advanced to two NCAA Tournaments during Patton's tenure including a 21-9 mark in 2012 which included a program-record 16 conference victories.
ROAD DIVAS
UCR played its first 13 matches on the road in 2013, tying Cal Poly for most road matches to start the season amongst the leagues' schools. This year, the Highlanders are away from the SRC Arena for their first 12 matches.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Three Highlanders earned all-tournament honors last season as Ashley Cox was named to the Wildcat Invitational All-Tournament Team on August 31, Maddie Hubbell was selected to the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic All-Tournament Team on September 7, and Cristina Maietta earned Bankers Classic All-Tournament Team honors on September 14.
