Flagstaff, AZ—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team continued action at the Lumberjack Classic Friday evening with a 3-1 loss to undefeated Northern Arizona. NAU (8-0) earned a first-set 25-17 win before the Highlanders (2-6) rallied for a 25-18 second-set victory, tying the match at 1-1. The Lumberjacks took a 2-1 lead in the contest with a 25-19 win in the third set, and closed things out with a 25-12 win in the fourth.
Helena Peric led UCR with a career-high 14 kills, while Alex Gresham added 12 and Bri Holmes had 11.
In the first set, there were seven ties through 7-7 as neither team took control. The Lumberjacks started to pull away, however, using an 8-3 run to open up the set, 15-10.
The Highlanders closed to three, 16-13, after scoring three of the next four points, but that was as close as they would get as NAU went on for the 25-17 win.
UC Riverside rebounded in the second set to tie the match at 1-1, utilizing an 11-0 run turning a 2-1 deficit into a 12-2 advantage. The Highlanders had three blocks during the rally while Gresham added four kills, and Peric had two.
UCR enjoyed a double-digit lead until Northern Arizona made a late push, outscoring the Highlanders 6-1 as the margin became 20-16. A Gresham kill stopped the rally, and the teams traded points to close out the set as the Highlanders earned a 25-18 win to tie the match.
UC Riverside fell behind 6-3 early in the third set, but scored four of the next five points to tie it at 7-7. The teams traded points until a 5-1 run by NAU made it 15-11, but the Highlanders countered and made it a two-point score, 19-17, capped off by kills from Peric and Megan Reza.
Still a two-point game at 21-19, the Lumberjacks scored the final four points of the set to go up 2-1 in the match with a 25-19 victory.
It was 4-4 in the opening moments of the fourth set when NAU rallied for eight straight points extending its lead to 12-4. An attack error by the Lumberjacks stopped the run, but UC Riverside got no closer than six the rest of the way as Northern Arizona went on for the victory.
The Highlanders concude action at the Lumberjack Classic on Saturday with a 10:00 am PT match against Grand Canyon.
