Flagstaff, AZ—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded action at the Lumberjack Classic Saturday morning with a 3-1 loss to Grand Canyon by the scores of 25-22, 16-25, 25-23, and 25-19.
Ashley Cox posted a game-high 14 kills to lead the Highlanders (2-7), while Alex Gresham added 13.
Grand Canyon (7-2) led wire-to-wire in the first set, opening up a 15-8 advantage midway through following a 5-0 run. UCR would eventually close the gap to two, 22-20, capped off by kills from Helena Peric and Bri Holmes, and a 'Lopes error.
GCU stopped the mini-run as the teams traded points over the next few rallies, but the Antelopes went up at set-point, 24-21. A Cox kill made it 24-22, but a final kill by Grand Canyon sealed the win.
UC Riverside took control of set two early, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 advantage following kills by Megan Reza, Amanda Press, and Peric. The Highlanders kept their lead above two the rest of the way, and extended it as high as 10 as they scored the final three straight points of the set.
With the match tied at 1-1, both teams jockeyed for advantage as there were four lead changes and seven ties in the third set. UCR had the lead midway through at 14-11, but Grand Canyon scored five straight to retake the lead, 16-14.
The teams traded points with the Highlanders tying the score five more times, the last at 22-22. The 'Lopes would go on to score three of the final four points, however, earning a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
UC Riverside rebounded early in set four with a 5-2 lead, but got outscored 6-1 over the next several rallies as GCU went on top, 9-6. The Highlanders countered and eventually tied the set at 18, capped off by kills from Fabiana Rosas and Cox.
Grand Canyon earned the next point to go back on top, and used that as part of a 7-1 run to close out the set and win, 25-19.
The Highlanders have one more weekend of tournament action on tap, traveling to the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational hosted by Utah Valley in Orem, Utah September 19-20.
