Orem, UT—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team gears up for its final non-conference tournament of the 2014 season, traveling to the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational hosted by Utah Valley on September 19-20. The Highlanders open play with a 3:30 pm PT match against Portland on Friday, then play the host Wolverines Saturday at 11 am before concluding action against Idaho State Saturday at 3:30 pm.
UC Riverside dropped each of its three matches this past weekend at the Lumberjack Classic—including one five-set battle, and two in four sets—to fall to 2-7 overall on the season. Â
Portland opened the year with a 3-1 mark, but have since gone 1-3 to even out its record at 4-4. The Pilots are 5-1 against UCR in the program's history, but the clubs haven't squared off against one another since 2008.
Following a 1-7 mark to open the season, Utah Valley has won two of its last three matches to improve to 3-8 overall. The Wolverines are 3-0 all-time against the Highlanders, with all three wins coming in straight sets.
Idaho State most recently lost a 3-0 decision to #12 BYU on Tuesday evening dropping its overall record to 3-7. The Bengals have won two of three against UC Riverside including a 3-0 win one year ago (box score/recap).

GAME NOTES
SWEPT UP
The Highlanders three-set win over Savannah State on September 6 (box score/recap) is the first sweep for UC Riverside since a 3-0 victory over Villanova on September 15, 2012 (box score/recap).
ALREADY THERE
UC Riverside's two wins so far in 2014 already match its win total from all of 2013.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
Senior Tyler Dorsey was named to the UNLV Invitational All-Tournament Team on August 31 after recording a career-high of 15 kills against the Rebels on August 30, and posting a 2.67 K/S mark during those three contests (story).
Freshman Alex Gresham and senior Megan Reza earned all-tournament honors at the SUU Tournament on September 6 after leading UCR to a pair of wins (story).
Gresham earned her second straight all-tournament nod after being named to the Lumberjack Classic All-Tournament Team on September 13 (story). She averaged 2.77 kills per set while hitting a team-best .310 during the Highlanders three matches.
BLUE AND GOLD DIGGER
Sophomore Maddie Hubbell ranked fourth in the Big West in digs per set last season with 3.93. After the first three weeks of action in 2014, the libero is averaging a team-best 4.03 D/S—good enough for sixth in the league.
SWITZERLAND
UCR is 0-4 in road matches this season, but 2-3 in neutral site contests.
LET THERE BE HEIGHT!
Of the seven newcomers to the Highlanders 2014 squad, three are taller than 6-feet, pushing UCR's roster to seven girls above 5-10.
KILLER INSTINCT
Junior Ashley Cox finished the 2013 season ranked eighth in the Big West Conference in kills per set at 3.07.
GENERAL PATTON
UC Riverside is in its second season under new head coach Michelle Patton. Patton comes to the Highlanders following five seasons at San Francisco State, where she took over a program that lay dormant for four years (2004-07). The Gators advanced to two NCAA Tournaments during Patton's tenure including a 21-9 mark in 2012 which included a program-record 16 conference victories.
ROAD DIVAS
UCR played its first 13 matches on the road in 2013, tying Cal Poly for most road matches to start the season amongst the leagues' schools. This year, the Highlanders are away from the SRC Arena for their first 12 matches.
