Orem, UT - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded action at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational Saturday afternoon with a four-set loss to Idaho State, 29-27, 21-25, 25-11, and 25-20.
Bri Holmes led the Highlanders (2-10) with 23 kills and a .356 hitting percentage, while Amanda Press had 13 digs to lead the squad. Tress Lyman led the Bengals (6-7) with 24 kills.
UCR fell behind early in the first set, 7-2, and still faced a deficit late in the frame, 21-12. ISU needed just four points for the win, but the Highlanders rallied, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to tie Idaho State at set-point, 24-24. Three different UC Riverside players contributed kills during the run, while the Bengals faltered with five errors.
The teams traded points with ties at 25, 26 and 27, but all three were set-points for Idaho State. Tied at 27 all, the Bengals finally closed out the battle with consecutive kills to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 29-27 win.
The second set saw 16 tie scores and 11 lead changes as both teams looked to take control. It was still tied, 21-21, when UC Riverside made a run, using kills by Holmes and Alex Gresham to go up 23-21, forcing Idaho State to call timeout.
After the break, an attack error by ISU made it set-point for the Highlanders, 24-21, and a Sandy Fung service ace put the nail in the coffin as UCR tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory.
After winning the first point of the third set, UC Riverside's offense stalled as they were outscored 9-2 by the Bengals. UCR cut the gap to four on two occasions, but could not stop Idaho State as they concluded the set on a 15-5 run, claiming the 25-11 win.
The fourth set was a much closer battle as it was just a two-point game, 20-18, late in the frame. ISU had the advantage, though, and scored three consecutive to go up 23-18.
A Gresham kill gave the momentum back to the Highlanders, but an error on UCR made it set-point, 24-19. A Rosas kill brought UC Riverside one point closer, 24-20, but a final attack by the Bengals closed out the set and the match, 25-20.
UC Riverside next returns to action on Saturday, September 27 with the start of Big West play, hosting Hawai'i for a 7 pm PT tip at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
