Box Score Riverside—Annelise Ito's game-high 19 points led four Highlanders in double figures Friday evening as the UC Riverside Women's Basketball opened the 2015-16 season with an 86-68 win over visiting Fresno State.
Joining Verin in double figures was Brittany Crain with 18, Rejane Verin with 17 and Akilah Martin with 10. Verin was playing in her first regular season game for the Highlanders, and added nine rebounds and four assists on the night.
The teams were tied at 13 with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter when UC Riverside went on 10-0 run that gave them a lead they would never relinquish. Late in the second quarter, the Highlanders pushed their lead to 21, and they took a 20-point advantage into the locker room at 46-26.
Crain and Ito each had 14 points at the break, with Ito adding seven boards and five assists.
Fresno State's Shaquanna Collins led the Bulldogs with nine points at the break making seven of 10 free throws in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs put togeter a mini-run late in the third as Mariah Faulk scored eight straight points on her own to slice the Highlanders lead to 15, 59-44, but that was as close as the 'Dogs would get.
In the fourth quarter Fresno State apllied a full-court press to try and climb back in the game, but they were unable to make a dent in the deficit.
Furr led the Bulldogs offensive efforts with 15 points, followed by Shaquana Collins with 14, and Bego Faz Davalos' near double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Highlanders hit the road Monday, November 15 for a 6:30 pm PT tip at San Diego State.
