Oregon State Pulls Away From Highlanders In The 2nd Half To Win 86-65

Box Score Corvallis, OR—The UC Riverside Women's basketball team took on #7 Oregon State Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders competed with the Beavers for most of the game, but Oregon State pulled away in the third quarter and never looked back.

UCR (2-2) found themselves down early in the game 11-2, but got three straight triples from Annelise Ito, Brittany Crain, and Clemence Lefebrve to tie the game at 11. The Highlanders shot 65% from the floor in the first quarter. Oregon State (3-0) would shoot 86% from the floor, including 4-5 from long range, and lead 31-27 at the end of the first

UCR opened the second with an 8-0 run to take a 35-31 lead. Both teams shot under 35% in the second quarter. The Highlanders did manage to go 6-7 from the free-throw line, while the Beavers took advantage of a 15-9 rebounding margin and three point shooting to create a five point margin at the break, 47-42.

The Beavers led by Sidney Wiese's 13 points. The Highlanders got 14 first half points Rejane Verin, and 11 from Ito.

The third quarter opened with an Oregon State 12-2 run fueled by two three-pointers from Weise making the lead 13, 59-46, forcing a Highlander timeout.

Coming out of the timeout the Oregon State run continued, as the Highlanders missed on three straight possessions and Beavers converted on three-straight trips down the floor to get the score to 65-46.

With the score 68-48, the Highlanders went on a 6-0 run, but Oregon State would get the next bucket to go into the fourth with a 70-54 lead.

In the fourth period, the hosts put together a 10-4 run in the over the first six minutes of play. Oregon State would go on to win 86-65, aided by shooting 10-21 from three-point range and a 42-24 rebound advantage.

The Highlanders were led by Verin's game-high 25 points, to go with 8 rebounds. Weisner had 22 and Ruth Hamblin 16 to lead four Beavers in double figures.

"I thought our kids played hard, and Oregon State showed us how good they are." Coach Margaritis said after the game.

Sunday's match-up was the first between the schools' women's basketball programs.

Oregon State Coach Scott Rueck on the Highlanders, "I liked the fight that we needed to have today to win ... Riverside is a nice team, veteran team, that executes a unique offense."

The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team plays next in the Thanksgiving Day Classic in El Paso, TX, where they play against host UTEP, Friday, November 27 at 6:05 pm PT.
