11-0 Run To Start Second Half Sends Men's Basketball To 81-59 Defeat At Ohio

Box Score Athens, OH--The Ohio Bobcats made their first four shots, and six of their first eight to start the second half, turning a seven-point lead into a 22-point cushion and snapping the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team's winning streak at four Wednesday evening, 81-59.

The Highlanders (9-6) kept it close in the first thanks in part to a four-of-six shooting performance from three-point range by Jaylen Bland. The senior was playing in front of a large contingent of family and friends who made the trip down from Michigan to watch the game.

The seven-point halftime deficit could have been smaller, but UC Riverside committed nine turnovers over the first 20 minutes of play which led to a 12-4 Ohio advantage in points off turnovers.

The Highlanders also found themselves in foul trouble early, as starting center Alex Larsson played just six minutes in the first, and starting forward Secean Johnson was limited to 11 after both players picked up a pair of personals. Johnson was whistled for his third and fourth fouls before the second media timeout in the second half.

UC Riverside was unable to find an answer for Bobcats (9-3) forward Treg Setty who finished with a game-high 20 points on nine of 16 shooting, while Jaaron Simmons and Antonio Campbell each chipped in with 15 apiece. Simmons, who entered the game ranked third in the nation in assists, handed out eight on the evening.

The Highlanders also struggled to get their starting post players involved on offense as Larsson and Johns combined to go four for 20 from the floor and 10 points. That deficiency helped Ohio to a 44- 26 advantage in points in the paint on the night.

Menno Dijkstra was the only UCR post player who was able to connect with any degree of consistency, going five for five from the floor en route to a career-high 10 points to go along with six rebounds..

Johns finished with eight points, marking the fourth time in the last five games that he has come up short of double figures in the scoring column.

The Highlanders ring in the New Year on Saturday, January 2 with a 5 pm PT home tip against CSU Bakersfield.
