Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team returns to The Plex for a nine-game home stand beginning Wednesday, March 11 with a 6 pm PT first pitch against Bakersfield.
After opening the season with a four-game sweep of Portland, the Highlanders are 3-9 in their last 12 games. Three UCR regulars are hitting better than .300 on the season led by Drake Zarate (.344/.412/.377). Vince Fernandez leads the Highlanders in on base percentage (.418) and slugging percentage (.542).
Right-hander Joie Dunyon gets his first starting nod of the year for UC Riverside Wednesday evening after five relief appearances. He has eight strikeouts in his 8.1 innings of work, and boasts an ERA of 3.24. Opponents are hitting just .226 off the senior.
Bakersfield brings a 9-7 record with them to the Inland Empire following a 5-0 loss to CSUN Tuesday evening (
box score). The Roadrunners had won six straight games prior to the loss to the Matadors including a 7-4 victory over ninth-ranked Arizona State on February 27 (
box score).
Joey Sanchez paces the Runners' offense hitting an even .464 with a .619 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage. Four other Bakersfield regulars are hitting better than .280, but as a team, the Roadrunners are hitting .248/.343/.323.
The CSUB pitching staff boasts an ERA of 3.50, but the Roadrunners have committed 18 errors on the year that have led to 21 unearned runs. AJ Monarrez (0-0, 4.50) makes his first start of the season for Bakersfield. He has logged just 2.0 innings of work on the year allowing three hits and a walk while striking out one batter.
