Chelsea Ponce Throws First No-Hitter In Program's Division I-Era In, 7-0 Win Over Bethune Cookman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Riverside- The UC Riverside Softball Team moves to a 26-7 overall record after topping Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-4 and shutting out Bethune Cookman, 7-0 Saturday at the LMU Invitational.

"Today was a special day," said head coach Linda Garza. "We are 22 players strong, and proudly represent UC Riverside and alumni. To earn the organization's first 26th win in a single-season, during the program's first no-hitter for Division I makes it remarkable. It's a great day to be a Highlander and I couldn't be more proud of this group of ladies."

With 26 wins, the 2015 Highlanders squad has taken over as the leaders of the program's Division I-era single-season wins record.

In game two of the day,  Chelsea Ponce etched her name in the Highlanders' record books as the first pitcher in the program's Division I-era to record a no-hitter. Ponce took the mound, facing 24 batters over seven innings of pitching. She now boasts a 18-3 record, extending her position as the leader in single-season victories in the Highlander's Division I-history.

Against Fairleigh Dickinson, the Highlanders recorded eight hits and took advantage of FDU's four errors, pushing six runs across including four in the first inning. Tayler Misfeldt recorded her fourth win on the season in three innings of work, including five strikeouts. Solidifying UCR's win was Ponce, throwing her first save of the season.

The Highlanders helped Ponce's no-hitter by cranking up the offense, logging 10 hits that resulted in five runs in the fourth inning. Leading the offensive effort was sophomore Haley Harris, going three-for-four at the plate, notching a single, double, and a triple. Freshman Rebecca Faulkner hit .500 for the game and batted in two RBI.

The Highlanders are now 3-0 at the LMU Invitational and will finish out the tournament Sunday, March 22 with a game against Seattle at 12 pm and LMU at 2 pm.
