Softball Splits Double-Header With UC Santa Barbara

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Santa Barbara- The UC Riverside Softball Team moves to 36-16 overall and 8-9 in the conference after splitting a double-header with UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders were victorious in game one, 6-2 but fell to the Gauchos in game two, 4-2.

Today's victory marked another broken record for the Highlanders as the 2015 squad has garnered the most conference victories in the program's Division I history (8).

Starting both games for the Highlanders was Chelsea Ponce. She boasts 27-9 record after earning a victory for game one of the day. Through 9.2 innings of work the redshirt junior gave up seven hits, allowed three earned runs, while striking out six.

Freshman Rebecca Faulkner stepped into the circle for the blue and gold in game one and two, throwing a total 2.2 garnering her eighth save of the season and the loss in game two.

UCR jumped out to an early lead during game one, pushing across three runs in the top of the first inning, then matching that with three more runs in the fifth. Jenna Curtan led the Highlanders in the batter's box with three hits in four at bats.

The Highlanders took an early lead once again in game two, scoring one run in the second inning before a scoreless three innings heading into the top of the sixth. UC Riverside would go up 2-0 on a grounder hit by Karina Romero to bring in Madeline Richard who had previously reached on an error.

The Gauchos scored all four runs in the bottom of the sixth off back-to-back home runs. MeShalon Moore hit the first for three runs followed by a solo shot by Shelby Wisdom.

The Highlanders are back in action Sunday, May 3 taking on UC Santa Barbara at 12 pm PT for the final game of the series.
