Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team got seven innings of five-hit baseball from starter Angel Landazuri Sunday afternoon, and the offense did its part by banging out 11 hits as the Highlanders took the season series from CSUN with a 6-0 victory.
For Landazuri (4-3), it was his best start since a March 12 outing at CSU Bakersfield when he went seven innings and allowed just four hits and one run. The Matadors managed just one hit over the first four innings of play, and by the time they recorded their second ht in the top of the fifth, the Highlanders led, 5-0.
A Colby Schultz sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second scored Aaron Cisneros with the first run of the day for UCR, and in the bottom of the fourth, the Highlanders exploded for four runs off of CSUN starter Andrew Weston (6-4) and a pair of Matadors relievers. Cisneros got things started with a solo shot to right field which doubled up the UCR advantage. Austin Colvin and Schultz then reached on back-to-back singles.
One batter, Michael Farris drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, but a Matt Ellis grounder to third looked as if it would end the inning. Third baseman Nolan Bumstead fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw to first pulled Jayson Newman off the bag, allowing Colvin to score. Mark Contreras then singled to right to score two more, to make it 5-0 UC Riverside.
The Highlanders' final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth as Thomas Walker began the frame with a single to left, eventually scoring on a Drake Zarate single to center.
Jared Morton tossed a scoreless inning in the eighth for UCR, and Max Compton did likewise in the ninth to nail down the win.
UC Riverside is off during the work week this week, but travels to Cal State Fullerton over the weekend for a three-game series with the Titans. First pitch Friday is at 7 pm PT.
