Softball Gives Up Two Late Runs As Aggies Steal, 5-4, Victory

Box Score Riverside—A back-and-forth affair Sunday afternoon between the UC Riverside and UC Davis Softball Teams ended when the Aggies plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh to steal the 5-4 victory.

UC Davis (18-26, 3-9) starter Katie Kibby (11-7) allowed just five hits on the day, as her teammates staked her to a 3-2 lead over the first three innings. Both UC Riverside (23-20, 5-7) runs up to that point were unearned, but the Highlanders scrapped together a rally in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the day.

Danielle Ortega led off the UCR sixth with a walk, and scored when Jenna Curtan doubled to left. Curtan advanced to third on the play, and came home one out later on a sac fly by Jenae Lockwood.

Rebecca Faulkner (0-4), who took over in the circle for starter Taylor Misfeldt in the top of the sixth, came on in the seventh to try and seal the win. She plunked Alex Sotomayor to open the inning, but picked up the next two outs on a fly ball to right and a fielder's choice grounder.

That brought Brianna Warner to the plate, and she hit a grounder to Hannah Rodriguez at short, for what should have been the final out of the game. But Rodriguez's throw sailed high, and when the dust settled, the Aggies had two runners in scoring position. Ashley Lotoszynski cleared the bases with a single through the right side, putting UC Davis back on top, 5-4.

The Highlanders tried to rally again in their half of the seventh, and with one out, Chelsey Holley lifted a fly ball to right center, which looked like it would go for extra bases. Warner made a nice over-the-shoulder running catch, however, securing the second out of the inning. Anessa Cepeda followed with a double to right center, but Ortega's pop up to third ended the game

The Highlanders are on the road next weekend, as they travel to CSUN for a three-game series beginning with a Saturday double header at 1 pm PT.
