Riverside–The UC Riverside Softball Team hosts its final series of the season this weekend, when the Cal Poly Mustangs come to town for a three-game set that begins with a single game on Friday, May 12 at 3 pm.
Saturday the teams will close out their 2017 regular seasons with a double-header that gets underway at 1pm.
Immediately after the season finale (second game of double-header) on Saturday, the Highlanders will honor seniors Haley Harris, Shylene Helms, Maddy Richard, Stephanie Tickemyer, and Sommer Wilson in a ceremony on Amy S. Harrison Softball Field.
UCR (26-23, 8-10) could move up to fifth place in the Big West, and match the program record for conference victories (11) with a sweep of Cal Poly.
Last weekend, the Highlanders picked up a series win against Long Beach State taking the first two games of series in capturing the team's second Big West series victory of the 2017 campaign.
Jenna Curtan continues to lead UC Riverside with a .357 batting average that ranks fifth in the league, and she remains tied for the Big West lead with four triples. She also has driven-in a team-leading 30 runs on the year.
Maddy Richard is second in the Big West with 28 walks, and has swiped 22 bases, which is good enough for fourth in the league. The 2016 Batting Champ is hitting .339 this season with a .458 on-base percentage.
Freshman pitcher Haley Marshcall went the distance in the series opening, 5-0, victory over the 49ers to get her record to 7-7 on the season.
Tayler Misfeldt also notched a win against LBSU. She now sits just three victories away from tying the program's career record of 40, set by Tracey Webber from 1984-87.
UC Riverside trails in the all-time series 30-17, and was swept in last year's meeting in San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly (33-17, 9-9) features dual threat Sierra Hyland, who leads the Big West in wins (20), strikeouts (235), and ERA (1.05). Hyland has earned USA Softball National Player of the Week honors on two occasions. At the plate, she carries a team-leading .329 average into the weekend, as well as a team-best 33 RBIs.
Lindsey Chalmers also sports a sub-2.0 ERA. She is 12-6 on the year with a 1.70 ERA, and may see some time in the circle this weekend.
