RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The UC Riverside Highlanders closed out its series against Long Beach State on Friday afternoon, falling 10-1 in five innings.
The Highlanders (3-18) struck first in the opening inning. Rebeca Cabezas singled to center and Leilani Juan followed with a base hit before Kayla Penor worked a walk to load the bases. Jackie Alday was then hit by a pitch to bring home Cabezas and give UC Riverside a 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State responded with a five-run second inning and added five more in the fourth to pull away. The Beach finished with 10 runs on 10 hits.
Cabezas and Juan recorded UC Riverside's two hits in the contest, with both reaching base during the Highlanders' first-inning rally. Penor also drew a walk as UC Riverside loaded the bases in the opening frame.
The Highlanders return to Amy S. Harrison Field on Saturday, March 21, to host UC Santa Barbara in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
