Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team was looking too complete its first-ever sweep of Long Beach State Sunday afternoon, but instead found itself on the wrong side of history, as 49ers starter Cielo Meza tossed a complete-game no-hitter in a 9-0 victory.

The Highlanders (26-23, 8-10) double header sweep of Long Beach State Saturday was just the second in program history, as UC Riverside outscored the visitors by a combined score of 17-3. They could have used some of those runs Sunday, as Meza retired 12 straight Highlanders before issuing a six-pitch walk to Chelsey Holley to open the bottom of the fifth. By then, the 49ers (21-27-1, 9-9) had a 6-0 lead, which they accumulated against three UC Riverside pitchers.

One batter after Holley drew the lead-off walk, Brittney Garcia reached on a Meza throwing error, which put runners on first and second. That was where Holley and Garcia would stay, however, as Haley Harris flew out to right field, and pinch hitter Sarah Parten grounded out to short.

Jenna Curtan drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth, and Holley led off the seventh with a base on balls, but both were stranded.

Jacy Boles (1-4) took the loss for UC Riverside, while Meza improved to 5-3 on the year.

The Highlanders have three game remaining on their 2017 schedule as they host Cal Poly in a single game on Friday, May 12 and a double header on Saturday, May 13 to close out the campaign. UC Riverside will honor its senior class at the conclusion of Saturday's double header.
