RIVERSIDE, Calif.— On a night full of passion and physical play, the Highlanders would emerge the victors as the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (4-8-1, 2-1-0) bested UC Santa Barbara (7-6-0, 1-2-0) 1-0 in a heated conference matchup.Â
"You have to be mature and composed to play this game," Head Coach Tim Cupello said. "It's an emotional and physical sport, but you have to let your game do the talking for you."
10 total cards were issued in the match. Six to the Gauchos and four to the Highlanders.
The Highlanders are now 2-1 in conference play after finishing their non-conference slate at 2-7-1. They have won four of their last five matches and in those wins have outscored their opponents 6-1.
"I give a lot of credit to our team, because we have stayed true to who we are all season," Cupello said. "We knew we we're gonna be challenged early in the season with a lot of road matches with good opponents, but we were able to stay poised and learn from each matchup. Now we're three games into conference and we're doing alright and we will continue to get better."
Both teams are now iced at 1-1 this season as the Gauchos took an early season win at home over the Highlanders 3-1.
The match remained scoreless for the first 75 minutes as the Highlander defense held tough only allowing two shots on goal the entire match.
The silence would be broken in the 76th minute as a Gaucho defender tangled up a Highlander striker and took him to the ground inside the box. This foul would grant UC Riverside a penalty kick and the Highlander's leading scorer, sophomore Daniel Aguirre, would step to the mark. For his 4th goal of the season the midfielder fired one past the diving keeper to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead that they would keep to earn their 2nd straight shutout.
UCR was on the attack all night as they out shot the Gauchos 13-5 and collected five shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Edwyn Gutierrez would earn his 4th win of the season adding two saves.
The Highlanders will remain home now as they host UC Davis this Saturday. The Aggies come in ranked No. 25 by Top Drawer Soccer.
