Women's Basketball Looks to Continue Strong Play

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—After picking up its first victory of the season against Southern Utah on Thursday, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball team will square-off against Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the SRC Arena. It marks the first time the teams will play each other.

Down for much of Thursday's game, the Highlanders went on a 21-9 run in the fourth quarter to pick up a 56-50 win. The team was led by Tianna Eaton, who scored 15 points and notched 10 rebounds. Jannon Otto had 11 points on the night, along with five rebounds.

Before the win, the Highlanders came off a three-game road trip in which they were thoroughly tested. After a tough 73-55 loss at USC to begin the season, the team nearly pulled off an upset at BYU, losing 72-70 in overtime. The team finished it off with a 76-51 loss to Oklahoma State on Sunday.

Otto leads the team in scoring so far this season, averaging 14.3 points per game. Marina Ewodo (11.5), Malou De Kergret (10.3) and Eaton (10.3) are also averaging double digits.

Ewodo has been quite the presence on the defensive end to begin the year, pulling down 33 rebounds and tallying nine blocks, which ties her for ninth-best in the NCAA.

SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
With a 2-0 record to begin the season, Coastal Carolina has beaten both Western Carolina and South Carolina State at home by double digits. In the team's 57-44 win on Tuesday, it was led by junior Naheria Hamilton, who scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Chanticleers also forced 17 turnovers and collected 10 steals.

R'HOUSE
The Highlanders have won .731 of their home games since the start of the 2014-15 season, going 37-14 at the SRC Arena. UC Riverside won six of its last seven home games during conference last season, ending the year with a 7-5 mark at home.

ROAD WARRIORS
After this weekend, the Highlanders will not play another home game until Dec. 28 against New Mexico State. The team will play seven games in between.
