Fullerton, CA — The UC Riverside Softball (1-1) team kicked off its season with a double-header on Friday in the Titan Classic. The Highlanders defeated Rutgers University 10-0 to start the day, but fell to Loyola Marymount 3-2 in the second game.
RUTGERS
The Highlanders opened up the tournament in dominant fashion with a 10-0 win over Rutgers University. The Highlanders won the game exercising the mercy rule as the matchup ended in 6th inning.
Senior pitcher Tayler Misfeldt had an outstanding opening day pitching a shutout through 5 innings as she struckout 9 of the 19 batters she faced. The veteran Highlander only allowed 1 hit and 3 walks as she picked up her 38th career win. She is now just 2 wins away from tying the UCR all-time record.
UC Riverside had success on the offensive side as well scoring 10 total runs off of 9 hits. Sophomore right fielder Danielle Ortega was one of three Highlanders to register two hits in the game as she led the team with 3 RBIs.
It was a true team effort as 8 different players reached home safely and 5 different players put RBIs on the board.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
UC Riverside fell in its second game of the afternoon to the Lions of LMU by a score 3-2.
It was a shaky start for the Highlanders as they allowed a run in the 1st inning on a wild pitch, but the team would fire back with 2 runs of their own to take the lead 2-1.
Junior second baseman Brittney Garcia drove in the first run with a single through the left side, and the Highlanders would score their second run by capitalizing on a wild pitch by LMU. These would be the only runs scored by UCR and the with runs scored by the Lions in the 3rd and 5th innings, Loyola Marymount would go on to win 3-2.
The Highlanders will now head to Los Angeles, Ca for the rest of the weekend, where they will face Maryland Saturday afternoon, as well as another double-header with Middle Tennesee and tournmanent host UCLA to finish on Sunday.
Saturday's matchup with the Terrapins is set to start at 2:30 PM at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, Ca.
