Riverside, Calif—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team will officially begin its 2018 season this weekend with two games at Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara.
It will mark an early test for a program that plays its first six games on the road. The Highlanders square-off against LMU at 7 p.m. on Friday and then head up to Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. contest on Sunday.
"We've always really tried to challenge ourselves with some difficult road games," head coach
Tim Cupello said. "We want to play the best teams in the country to see how we measure up. It is good experience for our guys to get on the road and play in rowdy environments."
The Highlanders have never beaten LMU, going 0-7-1, since 2001. UCR lost, 2-1, last season in Los Angeles.
UCR beat the Gauchos in dramatic fashion in the semi-finals of the Big West tournament last season. The 1-0 win marked the Highlanders first win over UCSB since Oct. 22, 2011.
