RIVERSIDE– Three Highlanders scored in double figures and the entire UC Riverside roster got into the scoring column as UCR ran away from the University of Redlands, 76-44, Thursday at SRC Arena.
Daniel Mading had 10 points, George Wilborn III added 11 and Callum McRae put in 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting, hauling in 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season as the Highlanders (3-2, 0-0 Big West) ended a two-game skid in nonconference play against the Bulldogs.
Redlands (3-2, 0-0 SCIAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before UC Riverside went on an 11-0 run and never trailed again. McRae recorded all three of his blocks during that stretch to slow down the visitors.
Redlands was led by Haas Berry, with 15 points. The Bulldogs remained pesky, with eight offensive boards in the first half, during which the Highlanders committed eight of their 19 turnovers. Still, UCR led by 16 at the break and maintained its focus in the second half. Up by 25, the bench was on its feet with under four minutes to play as Dragan Elkaz took a charge and UC Riverside went on to a 42-point victory. The Highlanders finished shot 56.9% from the field while limiting the visitors to 18 field goals on 66 attempts (27.3%).
"They were scrappy, hats off to them," said UCR head coach David Patrick of Redlands. "Nineteen turnovers drives me insane. We've got to do better than that. But I'm happy for the fans get to see this young team grow. I think good things are in store for this group."
Next up on their nonconference schedule, the Highlanders host Denver Saturday at 3 p.m. PT for Homecoming. "They're athletic. It'll be a good challenge for us," coach Patrick said of the Pioneers.
Less than halfway through his team's nonconference slate, the Highlanders head coach added some early thoughts on the Big West Conference.
"From the outside looking in, Irvine is the team to catch," Patrick said. "Santa Barbara going to be really good, and then I think it's open. Maybe there's a chance for us to move up the ladder, but to do that you've got to hold the fort at home."
Notes:
UC Riverside moved to 4-0 all-time against Redlands.
Thursday's 4 p.m. PT tipoff was the first game of a doubleheader at SRC Arena, followed by women's basketball against Utah Valley.
