Track and Field releases 2020 schedule

RIVERSIDE – The University of California Riverside track and field teams have released their 2020 competitive schedule, announced Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Nate Browne. The teams will host three meets during the outdoor season.

INDOOR
The Highlanders will be competing in five meets spanning across six weeks to prepare them for the indoor championships.

The teams will open the season at the Lumberjack Team Challenge hosted by Northern Arizona on January 17 in Flagstaff, Arizona. The following meets, the teams will be split up to bring a more challenging schedule.

One group will be competing in the Mountain T's Invitational hosted by NAU on January 31-February 1 and then the Don Kirby Invitational on February 13-14 hosted by UNLV. The running group will compete at the Indiana University Relays and the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt during the same respective dates.

"We are excited about this slate of meets. The overall goal of our schedule is to prepare our athletes for championships indoor (MPSF) and outdoors (Big West & NCAA Prelims/Finals)," Browne said.

The MPSF Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Washington on February 28-29.

After the MPSF Championships, the teams will compete in a tune-up meet at the RCC/CSUF on March 6 in preparation for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque on March 13-14.

OUTDOOR
The outdoor season consists of 13 meets throughout the course of the two months before the Big West Championships.

Browne spoke about hosting three outdoor meets.

"We have three meets in Riverside that will allow our kids a comfort level by competing in our own area code and having two meets on campus," he said.

The three host meets come across two separate weekends. The first will be the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic as the MULTIS meet taking place on March 26-27 and the rest of the competition will take place on March 28.

The inspirational Chris Rinne Twilight will continue to be the centerpiece of Riverside's track and field distinctiveness. The meet will take place on April 10 and will start at 2:00 p.m.

The teams will split up throughout the season aiming to gain a concentrated effort in the field events or running events.

The Highlanders will take a trip up to the San Francisco area for the Stanford Invitational on April 3-4 with the distance competing in the Mike Fanelli Invitational during the same time.

UCR will compete in four Big West meets (excluding home meets) throughout the course of the season. One will come at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach on April 17-18 and another at the Northridge Invitational on April 25.

The Big West Championships will be hosted by UCI this season, so Browne wanted to make sure that the team built a level of familiarity with the tracks there. The teams will compete at UCI twice before the championships.

"With UC Irvine hosting conference, our goal with two regular season meets there was to get our field event athletes comfortable with their rings and runways. The close of the season at UCI will be a great atmosphere to chase championships and qualifying marks for NCAA Prelims, USA Juniors and perhaps even the Olympic Trials," Browne said.

The first UCI meet is the outdoor season opener at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on March 20-21 and the second will be the season finale at the Steve Scott Invitational at May 1-2.

Riverside will make their way back to Irvine the following weekend, May 8-9, for the Big West Multi-Event Championships.

The running portion of the Big West Championships will take place on May 15-16.

After the conference championships, the qualifying athletes will compete in the NCAA first round championships in Lawrence, Kansas on May 28-30.

"Our staff can't wait to get the 2020 season started."
