Softball Drops First Doubleheader of the Weekend

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team saw a slow start to a rainy Stacy Winsberg Tournament Friday morning as the Highlanders dropped both games of their opening doubleheader. After getting out to a good start in the first game of the weekend UCR would fall behind to Ole Miss with the Rebels taking it 11-3. The team then faced Boise State in a game that would be cut short due inclement weather, but stand as 7-2 nod to the Broncos.

UC Riverside will look to bounce back tomorrow in an NISC Championship rematch with Loyola Marymount.

OLE MISS
UCR was the first to bat in the match up with Mississippi and took no time to hit scoreboard tacking on two runs in the first inning. Junior Danielle Ortega continued her season opening hot streak doubling to left center to bring in senior Hannah Rodriguez from first base. A bunt single from senior Brittney Garcia would bring Ortega home from third to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.

Junior Melanie Olmos earned the start for UCR allowing just two runs in the first two innings as both teams were knotted at 2-2 heading into the third.

Garcia led off the top of the inning with a single right and would get moved to second on a sac-bunt from junior Emma Ramelot. Freshman Jantzxen Owen was next to the plate doubling to right and scoring Garcia to regain the lead for the Highlanders.

The Rebel offense would then counter with four runs of their own in the third before a five-run fifth ended the game.

Ortega was perfect on the day going 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Garcia added two hits of her own to go with her RBI.

BOISE STATE
Junior Jacy Boles was the starter in the circle for game two of the tourney and held her own for four solid innings of work. The Highlanders would capitalize off their pitcher's solid start taking a lead in back to back innings.

With two outs in the third Ortega reached on an infield single before making her way to third on a hit by freshman Moana Pisia. Garcia was next to bat knocking in her second RBI of the day to give her team a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos would answer with a run of their own in the fourth, but UCR was just as quick to respond with another in bottom half as Ramelot scored on a wild pitch from third to regain the lead 2-1.

Boise State's offense awoke in the fifth adding six runs before the game was ended just six outs later in the top of the sixth due to inclement weather. The 7-2 Bronco lead would stand as the final score.

The Highlanders six hits in the game were spread out to six different players including a 1-for-2 with a walk performance from Garcia.
