Men's Golf Shows Flashes of Success, But Falls Short at Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif.—After a promising first day of play, the UC Riverside Men's Golf team had a challenging final two rounds of play and finished in 20th place at the Desert Intercollegiate.
The team's lineup for the tournament included: Michael Wong, Bahram Talle, Andrew Spilman, Sam He and Eddie Yi.
After the first round of play on Friday, the team had two student-athletes in the Top 25 and sat tied for 11th place out of 21 teams. Andrew Spilman was tied for 11th, shooting a 73 (+1) on the day, while Sam He tied for 24th after shooting a 74 (+2). The team had an overall score of 303 (+15).
On Saturday, the team didn't have the same kind of success. Spilman shot a 75 (+3), while He shot an 82 (+10) after back-to-back triple bogeys on holes eight and nine. The team had an overall score of 316 (+28).
The Highlanders were led in Sunday's round by Michael Wong, who finished the day with four birdies and a score of 76 (+4). However, Spilman and He shot a 79 (+7), while Bahram Talle shot an 85 (+13) and Eddie Yi shot an 88 (+16). The team finished the day with an overall score of 319 (+31) and a three-round total of 938 (+74).
The Desert Intercollegiate was hosted by the University of Wyoming at the Classic Club, which is a 7,306-yard, Par 72 layout.

Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton were the only other Big West schools that participated. The Mustangs finished tied for 16th place, while the Titans tied for ninth place.
UCR's next tournament will be at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix beginning on March 15.
