Track and Field to Santa Barbara for Start of Championships

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The season has prepared the UC Riverside Track and Field teams for their upcoming competitions in the Big West Championships. It's been an exciting season with a lot of personal and school records. Some of the athletes will participate this weekend while others will compete in a next week.

Some Highlanders will be competing in Fullerton for the Titan Twilight as a tune-up for next week's championships.

For the Big West Multis Championships, the Highlanders will send junior Dilini Amarasekara and freshman Julian Read.

Assistant Track and Field Coach Eric Fremd has big hopes for Amarasekara at the Big West Championships, "The women's heptathlon has national caliber athletes competing and I believe Dilini will be a podium finisher."

As for Julian, Fremd believes the freshman can do well in his first Big West competition, "Read has a chance to score in his first ever Big West Championship. He has a great chance to move into the top five all-time at UCR with a good performance."

It's going to be a weekend that sets the tone for the rest of the team and hoping to bring a momentum swing for next weekend. "With both multis, we are looking for them to kick off our entire team with inspiring performances," Fremd said.

While Amarasekara and Read are competing at the Big West Championships, the rest of the squad will be getting one last week's prep for their own championship competitions. Competing at the Titan Twilight will give the athletes one last chance to qualify as well tighten up any loose ends.

Assistant Track and Field Coach Candace Fuller talked about the season-long preparation, "This weekend is going to be a relaxed preparation meet for our Big West Championships. We are going there to work on our mental preparation and I expect great execution."

The Titan Twilight will be Friday, May 3 while the Big West Multis championship will be May 3-4.
