Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Highlanders men's tennis team continued its 2020 campaign on the road today with two games in a row against Arizona Christian University and Grand Canyon University, respectively. UC Riverside had a strong showing winning both matchups. They defeated ACU 7-0 and GCU 4-3.
The Highlanders swept the ACU Firestorm in the morning with a dominant showing in both singles and doubles flights. They never let up more than three points in a set, maintaining the momentum from yesterday's sweep against the Firestorm's GSAC Conference rivals, the OUAZ Spirit.
The second win of the day against Grand Canyon University was the first time UC Riverside has been able to best GCU in six matchups, dating back to a 2014 home match.
Head Coach Mattias Johansson said, "This was a huge win for our program - to win 4-3 over the 2019 WAC Champions, GCU. We lost to this team a year ago 0-7 and have never beaten them - so I'm very pleased with a true team victory. Getting the doubles point was so important and guys followed up with stellar play in singles. I am proud of them!"
Doubles flights #2 Gilbert Chung and Nabil Abdallah and #3 Andreas Whalen-Merediz and Daniel Velek each won their matchups 6-2, securing a point lead for UCR entering singles. Whalen-Merediz, Chung and Velek each won their single flights to ultimately pull out the team win.
The Highlanders remain undefeated at 3-0 this season and look towards their next test against University of Arizona, tomorrow, Sunday, January 19 at 8:00 AM PT.
