Highlanders Win Game Four, 6-3, to Split Series At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Riverside, California (UCR) baseball team won the fourth and final game against the Cal Poly Mustangs, 6-3. The Highlanders dropped the first two games of the series but claimed a 9-6 victory in game three. Today's win splits the series 2-2.

On the win, head Coach Justin Johnson commented, "I am extremely proud of how this group continued competing and fighting. We were down the first two games of the series and really battled to comeback in the second game of the doubleheader yesterday. That momentum carried into today and we executed a conference series split on the road, I couldn't be prouder!"

The Highlanders started things off quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Dylan Orick got on base on a fielding error by the Mustang's second baseman, sending Travis Bohall home to open up the scoreboard for the Highlanders. Ely Stuart was right behind him, scoring on a passed ball. Orick reached home for the third and final run of the inning off an RBI ground out from Anthony Mata.

In the third inning, Bohall and Stuart got on base on balls, and Nate Webb singled up the middle to send Bohall home, putting UCR ahead 4-0.

Eric Marrujo started on the mound for the Highlanders, and held Cal Poly scoreless through four complete innings. In the fifth, the Mustangs opened the inning with a homerun to cut the Highlanders lead, 4-1.

In the seventh, Orick smacked the ball, and while a play at the plate was attempted, Bohall was safely sent home. UC Riverside extended their lead, 5-1.

In the eighth inning, the Mustangs extended to 5-3 with an RBI single followed by scoring on a wild pitch. The Highlanders weren't done and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning, as Nate Webb hit another RBI single to take the Highlanders to the final score of 6-3.

Marrujo threw 5.2 innings to earn the win, letting up five hits, just one run and striking out one batter. Jake Lachemann earned the save throwing the final 3.1 innings, letting up three hits, two runs, and striking out three.

Ely Stuart was on fire, hitting 4-4 and scoring one run. Bohall went 3-4 and scored four of UCR's six runs. Orick and Webb each earned two RBIs.

The win brings the Highlanders to 12-17 overall and 10-14 in Big West play. Next weekend, UC Riverside returns home to host UC San Diego for another four game Big West set. The first game is scheduled for Friday, April 30 at 6:00 PM.
