Highlanders Drop a Heartbreaker on Senior Night

Presented by Altura Credit Union

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Callum McRae dropped a career-high 32 points on Senior Night as UC Riverside closed out the home portion of the 2021-22 schedule on Saturday evening against UC Santa Barbara, dropping a 97-90 heartbreaker in double overtime.

McRae is the first Highlander to score 30 points in a game since Dikymbe Martin in 2017.

Zyon Pullin registered 19 points on the night with 15 coming from the free throw line, becoming the first Highlander to hit 15 free throws in a game since Bob Gray in 1967.

McRae led UCR with 12 points at the half on 6-of-11 shooting, as two possessions separated both teams through the majority of the game.

UC Riverside and the Gauchos were neck and neck through the first 20 minutes with two defensive rebounds separating the teams. The Highlanders gained the 17-8 edge, though, in bench points up to halftime.

UC Riverside converted their first three field goals out of halftime while holding the Gauchos to 2 of 6 from the field to start the second half, as Pullin drove through the lane to cut the deficit to two at 40-38 at the 17:22 mark.

UC Santa Barbara went on a 5-0 run that spurred a UCR timeout, but the Highlanders came out of the break with a 5-0 run of their own. A three from Flynn Cameron brought UC Riverside within a field goal with 11 minutes left for the home squad's first triple of the second half.

Wil Tatttersall knocked down his second three of the night to bring the Highlanders within a point after UC Santa Barbara responded to McRae's up-and-under on the other end. Pullin sank a pair of free throws at the 8:55 mark to give UCR its first lead since 14-12.

Cameron knocked down another three to give UCR its third three in its last four attempts. After Santa Barbara responded, the New Zealander connected on the layup after Santa Barbara responded, ultimately scoring eight of his 14 points in the second half.

McRae completed the three-point play with seconds remaining to force an overtime period that ended with Dominick Pickett draining three crucial free throws to force a second extra period. However, the Gauchos were unable to miss in both extra periods.

The Highlanders will hit the road for the final weekend of the regular season, kicking things off on Thursday, March 3 at Cal State Fullerton on ESPNU. Tipoff from Titan Gym is slated for 8:00 p.m.
