Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders dropped the first game of the final series of the year to Crosstown rivals, the California Baptist University (CBU) Lancers.
Early game heroics, including a grand slam from Jacob Shanks, put UC Riverside up to an 6-1 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Lancers answered back in short order. tacking four runs on in the bottom of the second inning, cutting the Highlanders lead down to 6-5.
In the third inning, California Baptist tied it up with a single run, before pulling ahead with a two run fourth inning.
The score sat at 8-6 in favor of CBU through a scoreless fifth inning, before tacking on five runs across their last three innings at the plate.
Taylor Juline and Cole Pofek scored in the top of the ninth as they attempted to rouse a comeback, but it wouldn't be enough against CBU.
The final score was 13-8.
The Highlanders host the Lancers at the Riverside Sports Complex tomorrow, May 27 at 6 PM
