RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside officially announced its complete 2022-23 Men's Basketball schedule today, Thursday, September 22. Click here for the full schedule and click here for ticket information.
Schedule Overview: Highlights
The Highlanders tip off the year with their non-conference segment and what is arguably the toughest slate of opponents any school in The Big West will face ahead of conference play. UCR will take on Big East giant Creighton University, Pac-12 powers Oregon and Colorado, and revitalized WCC teams in Loyola Marymount University (LMU), University of San Diego (USD) and University of Portland. in addition, UCR will play in the Las Vegas Championship tournament in late November where they will challenge Wright State, Weber State and Abilene Christian – all 20-win teams from a season ago – at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada, the host site for The Big West Basketball Championships. Upon their return from the Las Vegas area, they will make the short trip across the city of Riverside to renew the "Crosstown Showdown" rivalry with California Baptist University (CBU).
"We have a tremendous group of student-athletes in our program," said Head Coach, Mike Magpayo. "This is a tight-knit group of young men who understand what it takes to be successful at this level. They are focused and they are preparing for a challenging journey this year. They understand the need to prepare, focus and execute, and this year's schedule will challenge us like never before. We believe our non-conference schedule will prepare us for a very tough Big West conference schedule and I believe The Big West is a strong, tough, physical and competitive conference. We embrace any and all challenges and we look forward to the opportunities those challenges present."
UCR will compete in its fifth straight multi-team event (MTE) during Thanksgiving week, battling Weber State, Wright State and Abilene Christian in the Vegas Championship after going 2-0 last year at the Cerebro Sports Golden Turkey Classic.
The Highlanders have had some memorable moments in recent MTEs, most recently holding UTEP to one three-pointer in last year's opener. One year prior, a neutral-site 57-42 win over Washington in Las Vegas gave Magpayo his first head coaching win and the first by a head coach of Asian American descent at the NCAA men's Division I level.
UC Riverside will also take on three West Coast Conference schools in Loyola Marymount on the road while Portland and San Diego come to the Inland Empire. UCR will welcome the Steve Lavin-led Toreros on the back end of a home-and-home series.
The Highlanders will start Big West action on December 29 at the SRC Arena against CSU Bakersfield in the midst of five of six games at home. UCR will hit the road in conference action for the first time in a New Year's Eve matinee at Long Beach State.
As part of The Big West slate, UC Riverside will return to UC Davis and Hawaii for the first time since 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic forcing previous matchups to be canceled.
UCR will host Senior Night on March 2 against UC Irvine and will close out the regular season on March 4 at Cal Poly before competing in the Big West Championship at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada.
