Late Surge Pushes Highlanders Past Fullerton

UCR wins sixth in last eight overall to stay unbeaten in conference play

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside wrapped up the inaugural Big West Bold Week on Saturday evening at the SRC Arena with a 75-68 win over Cal State Fullerton.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR went on a 5-0 run going into the first media break. The Highlanders drew a pair of offensive fouls to keep pressure on Fullerton while nursing a 9-8 lead.
  • Barrington Hargress cleaned up a slow offensive stretch for the Highlanders with a three from the top of the key.
  • Six of UC Riverside's first 16 points of the night came on the break.
  • UCR used a 7-0 run to break a 27-all tie and pull ahead by six before the under-four media timeout. UC Riverside spread its scoring across the board in the first half, led by Kaleb Smith's 11 points.
  • Neither team's lead in the first half surpassed six points in a tightly contested first 20 minutes. The Highlanders emerged from the break with an 11-4 run before the game returned to close margins.
  • Parker Strauss broke a nearly three-minute scoreless streak for UCR with a pair of technical free throws out of a timeout. Meanwhile, UC Riverside held the Titans scoreless for a little more than two minutes and maintained a two-point advantage at the under-12 media timeout.
  • UC Riverside finally disrupted the game's back-and-forth flow down the stretch. Isaiah Moses knocked down a corner three across from the Highlander bench at 5:20, then Hargress followed that up with a step back from the free throw line and a breakaway layup. Nate Pickens then piled it on with an inside jumper.
  • Pickens pulled down a crucial rebound at the other end to give UCR the needed stop, and Smith provided the dagger with a teardrop three.

NOTABLES

  • Smith posted his fifth double-digit scoring performance of the season and third straight with 18 points on Saturday. He and Hargress paced the Highlanders with 38 points combined while Moses chipped in 11 and Joel Armotrading grabbed nine rebounds.
  • UCR moved to 2-0 in Big West play for the second time under Mike Magpayo, also downing Fullerton for the third straight meeting and fifth in their last seven.
  • UC Riverside displayed lockdown defense down the stretch, holding the Titans to 1 of 8 from the floor to end the game.
