UC Riverside Walks Off Hawai’i in Game Two

Pitts goes 5 for 6, delivers game-winning hit in 13th

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside played game two of a three-game series against Hawai'i on Saturday, securing a dramatic 4-3 win in 13 innings at the Riverside Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Kurt Marton retired three of his first seven batters on strikeouts for a strong start to game two.
  • Robert Pitts collected his sixth hit of the series in the third with a double to left center. Pitts moved up 90 feet on a groundout but was stranded on an inning-ending flyout.
  • Joshua Martinez took the mound in relief in the sixth inning after Marton went 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.
  • UCR and Hawai'i traded offensive spurts in the sixth and seventh.
  • Jayden Lopez dropped a fly ball into left field to score Robert Pitts in the sixth after Hawai'i drew first blood in the road half of the frame.
  • The Rainbow Warriors retook the lead in the seventh, but Andrew Rivas set up more Highlander offense with a leadoff double after the seventh inning stretch.
  • Landon Nunes got aboard on an error from Hawai'i's catcher to put runners on the corners, and some ensuing wild pitch chaos allowed UCR to take the lead back.
  • Nunes advanced on a wild pitch, and subsequent one combined with another error from UH's catcher brought two Highlanders home for a 3-2 lead.
  • Joshua Martinez was in trouble in the eighth but got the elusive third out on a fly ball to left center after Hawai'i threatened on a double. The Rainbow Warriors later forced extra innings in the ninth.
  • UCR put the winning run on second in the form of David Gibbs, who singled to right and stole second before Hawai'i intentionally walked Andrew Rivas. UH kept the game going with a routine putout in left field.
  • David Whittle got the 13th inning going with a leadoff double off the right center field wall before Ethan Bergan bunted out. With one out, Robert Pitts slapped the first pitch he saw into center and Whittle slid home on the walkoff.

NOTABLES

  • Pitts recorded his third straight four-hit game, going 5 for 6 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases. The junior is now 13 for 16 in his last three games.
  • UC Riverside held the Rainbow Warriors to just two hits in extra innings to hand Hawai'i its third loss of the season.

UP NEXT
