LA QUINTA, Calif. — The UC Riverside Highlanders opened play at the Big West Championship on Sunday at La Quinta Country Club, carding a 304 (+16) to sit in 12th place after the first round.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Liam Hartling led the Highlanders with a first-round 74 (+2), highlighted by back-to-back birdies on holes 5 and 6. He is tied for 28th overall.
• Chanhee Ryu finished right behind with a 75 (+3), also picking up a birdie on holes 4 and 5 for a 38^th position.
• Stephen Luo shot 77 (+5) and notched birdies on holes 13 and 17 to sit tied for 50th.
• Von Wasson recorded a 78 (+6), birdieing holes 11 and 13 during his round.
• Hartej Grewal rounded out the lineup with a 79 (+7), posting a birdie on hole 1, 10 and 13.

• UCR will look to climb the leaderboard in Monday's second round.
