Youngsters Gain Plenty of Experience at Valentine Invite, Battle Born Classic

Highlanders complete another successful weekend on both coasts

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Valentine's Day weekend was one for the young corps of UC Riverside track & field in a coast-to-coast two-meet weekend, as the Highlanders continued the early season at the Battle Born Classic and the Valentine Invite. 

Tyler Kaan wasted no time rearranging the program's top 10 in the men's indoor mile, sporting a 4:10.69 in Boston for seventh all-time. Across the country, Gabriella Colon-Gipson recorded UCR's first mark of the Battle Born Classic in Reno. The sophomore paced the Highlanders in the women's weight throw for the second straight meet with a personal-best 16.70m / 59' 9.5".

Kazu Kimura won the men's long jump in Reno with a 7.51m / 24' 7.75", good for second all-time and a new personal best. Addae Ma'at was UCR's second top-10 record finisher in the event with a 7.22m / 23' 8.25" in his second collegiate meet. 

Mateo Garcia improved his top-10 standings in the weight throw and shot put in Reno. 

Also in Reno, Kamea Hunter advanced to the semis of the women's 60 while Andrew Garcia cracked the top 10 in the men's 60 with a 6.97/6.99A. Maxwell Jefferson and Arthur Celestine Jr. also posted top 10s, but in the 60H to close out an impressive first day. Jefferson (7.94/7.96A) tied the school record while Celestine (8.27/8.29A) tied for fourth all-time. 

Lily Woolery (2:13.22) and Isatu N'Diaye (2:14.53) kickstarted day two with top marks in the women's indoor 800. N'Diaye's run was an indoor best, while Woolery put up a personal best. Also in short sprints, Mercy Ehiemere (24.28) and Diyana Hackley (24.66) picked up top-10 times in the 200 while Michael Petrick (21.80) did so on the men's side. 

In the mile, Morgan Nygren cracked the top 10 with a 4:56.47.

Back in Reno, Mallik Bolton (48.28) and Spencer Hotch (48.79) brought the heat in the men's 400. Both women's 4x400 tandems won their heats, but it was the A team of Ehiemere, Hackley, Elena Mack, and Raykiyat Olukoju cementing the second-fastest all-time mark. 

Santia Ali closed out an impressive weekend with her first career top-10 mark, recording an 11.83m/38' 9.75" in the triple jump for seventh all-time.
