Highlanders Fall at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The Highlanders ended their two game road trip falling at UC Davis tonight, 65-56. Hannah Wickstrom had a game high 31 points in the loss.

The first quarter was tight, with UC Davis holding a two points lead, 13-11. The Aggies built a seven point lead midway through the first and held UCR to five points over a five minute stretch. Maria Mejia ended the scoring drought with a jumper and a few possessions later Makayla Minshall hit a jumper and the Highlanders trailed only by four, 13-9.

In the second UC Davis extended that four point lead to ten, not allowing a basket until the seven minute mark. That's when Wickstrom hit a free throw to cut it to, 21-12. She added a layup and another free throw and the Highlanders were back into it, trailing by six. Later in the quarter Bria Shine's layup put the Highlanders down by four. In the remaining minute of play back to back threes by Kaylani Polk and Wickstrom and the game was tied at 25.

The Aggies went on a 10-0 run to start the third before Minshall got the Highlanders on the board in the quarter. The Highlanders could not get the deficit closer than six in the third and after three UCR trailed 43-36.

In the fourth two quick baskets by UCR and the Highlanders trailed by three. Then the Aggies hit a couple of their own and just like that the lead was back to seven. With four minutes left in the game the Aggies went up by 11. Maya Chocano hit a three and it looked like the Highlanders were getting back into the game. However, the Aggies answered back and UCR got it down to five a couple of times, but that was as close as they would get.

A pair of late UC Davis free throws and the Aggies sealed it, winning 65-56.

Up next for the Highlanders is UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night from the SRC Arena. Game time is 6PM.
