RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside hosted Cal State Fullerton in a thrilling game at the SRC Arena. The Highlanders forced overtime, but fell to the Titans, 82-78. With the loss UCR falls to 5-7 in Big West Conference play.
The Highlanders and Titans traded baskets early on in the first, then Cal State Fullerton built a six point lead. The Titans then they took an eight point lead with a minute left in the quarter. The Highlanders went on a scoring drought that lasted almost three and a half minutes until
Bria Shine scored with four seconds left.Â
In the second quarter UCR's offense picked up. They outscored the Titans 25-13 in the period with
Seneca Hackley scoring six points and
Hannah Wickstrom adding 14 of her own. The Highlanders took a 35-29 halftime lead.Â
The offense stayed hot in the third quarter when UCR scored 24 points as Wickstrom scored 13 more.
Makayla Minshall added a bucket as time expired and UCR had, at the time, a commanding 14 point lead, 59-45.
Things changed in the fourth. Cal State Fullerton started to chip away at the Highlanders' lead, but UCR was able to answer each time and held a 16 point lead with just under eight minutes left in regulation. The Titans defense then turned over the Highlanders seven times in a five minute span and took a one point lead with 2:30 on the clock. Shine hit another big shot for UCR to give the Highlanders a one point lead.
Then with a minute left Cal State Fullerton took a two point lead and it looked like they would escape with a win. UCR then called its final timeout of regulation after a pair of missed free throws.
Coming out of the Highlanders' final time out Wickstrom got the ball in the paint, made a jumper and forced OT.
In the extra frame the UCR scored first, but the Titans found themselves with a three point lead. UCR cut it to one, but that is as close as they would get. The Highlanders went scoreless in the last two minutes of the game and that was it.
