RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Tonight, at the SRC Arena the Highlanders host the CSUN Matadors. It also is the Play4Kay Game. The game is part of a larger initiative in which member schools of the Big West Conference selected a game in February to raise awareness and funds to support research on all cancers affecting women.
For the Highlanders, tonight is that game.
Additionally, the Big West's Tough Like Tammy fundraising initiative, a joint venture between Big West women's basketball, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Big West women's basketball analyst Tammy Blackburn, hopes to secure a $50,000 grant. The funds will assist women in underserved communities in Southern California.
How?
First, fans can help reach the goal by donating directly to the fund (link below) or make a pledge for each offensive rebound during the final month of the Big West women's basketball season. We're in that now.
Second, fans can support the Highlanders and the cause by purchasing an official Tough Like Tammy t-shirt at
BigWestShop.org. A portion of the proceeds from sales will be donated to the campaign.
As of mid-January, the Tough Like Tammy program is over 60% of the way to reaching the goal.
As part of the overall campaign, players throughout the country were selected as Kay Yow Servant Leaders. Earlier this year
Maya Chocano was one of 61 athletes selected for that honor. She wears a patch on her jersey recognizing her as a Kay Yow Servant Leader.
"I'm honored to be recognized as the Kay Yow Servant Leader," said Chocano back in November. "For me, it's about leading with humility, supporting my teammates and carrying forward the values Coach Yow stood for."
At halftime of the 2026 Credit Union 1 Big West Women's Basketball Championship at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada on March 14, 2026, a check of all funds raised will be presented. Additionally in Henderson, in lieu of a parking fee, fans attending the basketball championships are encouraged to make a donation in any amount to Tough Like Tammy.
