HONOLULU, O'ahu – UC Riverside dropped its third straight at Hawai'i this afternoon, 10-5. Starting for the Highlanders was Joshua Martinez who went three innings giving up three runs. It was his fifth start of the year and he did not figure into the decision.
Jarren Sanderson got things rolling for UCR when he led off the second inning with his sixth homer of the year. Up 1-0, Manoah Chapman came up with two outs and doubled home Robert Pitts putting UC Riverside up 2-0.
The Rainbow Warriors answered back in the bottom of the second scoring two runs to tie things up. Noah Rodriguez singled home the first Hawai'i run and Kamana Nahaku was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Taylor Takata.
Hawai'i scored once in the third and once in the fifth to make it 4-2. Then in the top of the seventh UCR put up three to take a 5-4 lead. It started when Pitts reached on an error and Chapman singled to left center. With two on and one out Ty Walton hit what should have been an inning ending double play, but the ball struck the umpire allowing Pitts to score.
Chapman then scored the tying run on a Lucas Bonham single and UCR took the lead on an error by the Rainbow Warriors' center fielder.
The bottom of the seventh is when Hawai'i took control of the game after scoring six runs in the inning. Ben Zeigler-Namoa hit a two-run homer to give the lead right back to Hawai'i, 6-5. After a single, RBI groundout and an error it was 10-5 Hawai'i.
That was it, the Highlanders only managed one baserunner in the final two innings and dropped their sixth straight.
Next up is the final three home games of the year as UCR hosts UC Irvine. Game one is Friday afternoon with first pitch set for 2PM.
