5/9/2026 7:16:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Anteaters took game two of the series with the Highlanders, 15-3. Matthew O'Brien got the start for the Highlanders and was saddled with his sixth loss of the year. He went 3.1 innings giving up five runs, one earned and struck out one.
UCR got on the board in the bottom of the first. David Gibbs led the game off with a double and moved up to third on a bunt single by Robert Pitts. After Pitts was picked off at first, Isaiah Hernandez drove in Gibbs on a single to left center. Jarren Sanderson followed with a double, but he and Hernandez were stranded.
The Highlanders then scored in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Hernandez came up big again and drove in Andrew Rivas. It was Hernandez' second RBI and hit in as many innings.
The Anteaters took the lead in the top of the third that they would not relinquish. Five times UC Irvine scored five runs on five hits, but it was a key UCR error that allowed the last four runs to score.
The Anteaters scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-2. UCR got one back in the bottom of the frame on a Jaxon Byrd double to right scoring Sanderson. Trailing 7-3 the Highlanders were still in it.
In the top of the seventh, however, UC Irvine scored eight times. They only needed three hits to do so, as they were aided by another UCR error, two walks and two hits by pitch.
UCR went quietly in the final three innings and dropped its eighth straight.
They look to snap the losing streak tomorrow in the final home game of 2026 with first pitch at 1PM.
