Highlanders control the match in win over Chicago State
ST. GEORGE, Utah - UC Riverside (3-6, 0-0 Big West) snapped a five-match skid on Thursday evening at Burns Arena with a dominant 3-0 win (25-13, 25-21, 25-14) over Chicago State (0-10, 0-0 Northeast Conference).
The Highlanders hit a season-high .300 (48-18-100) while Andrea Brewer scooped up a career-high 15 digs.
UC Riverside roared out of the gate with a 5-0 run on two kills apiece from Andrea Brewer and Sariah Johnson, and an additional kill from Zeynep Belgutay. UCR opened up a 14-7 advantage following three Chicago State errors, and a kill from Juliette D'Eliseo sent the match to its first media timeout.
UCR took the set after a blistering .387 to -.040 hitting margin over the Cougars.
Johnson followed up a couple CSU errors to push UCR to a 3-0 lead starting set two. The Highlanders stretched it to 7-1 to force a Cougar timeout. A Belgutay kill halted a brief offensive spell by Chicago State before the Cougars found their way back into the set.
UC Riverside closed out a 2-0 set lead, pulling away from an 18-17 advantage to a more comfortable 25-21 win.
Neither team's lead exceeded three points in set three until Johnson logged her eighth kill to make it 12-8. The Highlanders rattled off nine straight points to take a 21-9 lead before finishing off its second sweep of the year.
UC Riverside resumes its stay in the Beehive State on Friday, September 18, with a 5:00 pm first serve against tournament host Utah Tech on ESPN+.
