Brewer, Doll, lead the way for UC Riverside
SAN JOSE, Calif. - UC Riverside (2-3, 0-0 Big West) closed out the SJSU Invite on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Gym with a 3-1 defeat (25-22, 25-27, 11-25, 25-27) to Portland (3-1, 0-0 WCC).
Andrea Brewer now has three 10-kill performances in five matches this year after putting down 11 against the Pilots on 29 swings. Casi Doll was close to a double-double with nine kills and six digs, tying Brewer with 12 points on the day.
Portland and UCR traded 3-0 scoring runs to start the afternoon before Evelyn Hendrix and Nikki Hughes teamed up on the block to tie set one at five. The set's seesaw tempo continued with neither side leading by more than three for the majority of the time.
Separate spurts of offense, including consecutive kills from Hendrix, Doll, and Zeynep Belgutay, made Portland twice call for time. UCR used its largest offensive burst of the set to go ahead 23-17 before hanging on to go up one set to none.
The Highlanders held Portland to .097 hitting in set one.
UCR started set two with back-to-back points, but found themselves nipping at the Pilots' heels after allowing a 4-0 run. UC Riverside climbed back in with a 4-1 run of its own thanks to a kill and an ace from Belgutay, and Doll pulled the set level at 16 shortly after with a solo block. UC Riverside picked up the pace at the end of set two with a 4-1 run, but couldn't finish the job.
The Highlanders struggled out of the gate in set three, but found brief success with consecutive aces from Maya Barron that pulled the squad within five.
UCR flipped the script in set four with an energetic 9-4 lead to start on a .250 hitting line. UC Riverside took advantage of three straight Pilot errors following a 3-0 Portland run, sending set four to a Pilot timeout at 15-11. An offensive surge from the opponent preceded a point-for-point battle to 25, as no lead exceeded two from 20-18 on. The Highlanders staved off one match point before Portland closed it out.
UC Riverside returns to the court on Wednesday, September 9, with a 6:00 pm first serve at Northern Arizona to start the Lumberjack Classic.
