Riverside—After five straight setbacks the Highlander hoop forces blasted out for their first victory of the season, a 87-54 lambasting of Cal Western (USIU) Saturday on the San Diego Municipal Gym hardwoods.
It was a great initial triumph for the Scots, one to fashion more of the same provided the same calibre of ball is played in the future.
Coach Frank Lindeburg cleared the bench of casaba troops and all did well in the battle.
Guard Dave Geary, breaking through with a barrage of baskets, continued to finish high in action thus far as he tanked 19 points, high for the Clan and tied for game laurels only by forward Doug Davis of the Westerners.
Besides Geary, two other Highlanders hit in the multiple digit category, namely guard Dick Moore and center Larry Crim. Moore, frosh from Fontana pierced the webbing for 13 while sophomore Crim from Redlands sunk 11.
Junior Ron Endeman, playing in a forward capacity, came close to a two figure mark as he registered nine.
Lindeburg's charges made good on a creditable 60 per cent of the field goals attempted and far outclassed the taller, rangier Westerners in the rebound and backboard clearing department.
Earlier last week the Scots experienced a coupe of sound drubbings. Tuesday night they journeyed to Clarmeont to duel the Pomona-Claremont Sagehens and were whipped 86-48 by a bunch of court gobbling demons. Guard Ray Zouhar, soph from El Centro, emerged the high point man for the Highlanders with a total of nine, while Geary came through with eight.
For the winners, forward Mike Gray and guard John Nichols bucketed 12, while forward John Poer and guard Dick Patton sunk 10 and 11 respectively.
And then on Friday night, in the only homestand of the week, the Clan lost to the Forty-niners of Long Beach State 96-49 a quintet which whipped the Sagehens for first place consolation laurels in the recently concluded Redlands 'R' Tournament.
Guard Tom Sutherland and forward Frank Morandini led the onslaught, racing the 49ers to a 42-18 intermission bulge.
Then after the break, Bill Baron, highly regarded hoopster who had played the bench the first half, came in to rung up 17 points, tying Sutherland and forward Don Engels for high-point honors.
Geary again led the Highlander cause with a 13 point effort, with frosh forward Don Moore from Fontana trailing with eight, six coming at the charity lane.
Two bad beatings, but one huge victory. Not so bad.
