9/27/2002 4:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Sacramento State 0 - Box Score
Riverside—Kerri Fahres’ second half goal provided UCR with all the offense it would need as goal keeper Kristin Cocks and the Highlander defense posted their fifth straight shutout in defeating Sacramento State 1-0 at the Lower Fields on Friday.
In the opening minute of the second half of a scoreless match, forward Tracey Schuster lined up for a corner kick from the left corner. Schuster centered a pass that midfielder Kelly Hurley allowed to travel through her legs to a wide-open Fahres. Fahres controlled the pass and blasted a 12-foot shot past Sacramento State goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman, and UCR held a 1-0 advantage.
UCR had another scoring opportunity in the 72nd minute, when Jessica Armel found herself open in front of the Sacramento net, but her shot missed wide. UCR out shot the Hornets (1-6-1) 19-5. Cocks recorded two saves.
With the win, the Highlanders extend their winning streak to six, (6-3), and the UCR defense has not allowed a goal in 466 minutes.
The Highlanders will return to action playing host to the University of San Francisco in a non-conference match on Sunday, September 29 at 1:00 PM.
