UCR goes toe to toe for second straight match
TULSA, Okla. - UC Riverside (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Big West) hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to Oral Roberts (3-0-0, 0-0-0 Summit League) at Case Soccer Complex.
KaMia Elliott heard the call in the third minute, coming off her line to prevent a short-range chance in the box. The Highlanders were fortunate four minutes later following ORU's first of seven first-half corner kicks.
Elliott came out of goal once more in the 13th minute to shut down a scoring chance. UCR's back line pushed aside a look on goal in the 14th as the junior grabbed her first save.
Mia DiLeo pickpocketed a defender and UCR eventually won its first corner in the 18th minute. Finley Aghassi later had a go from well outside the 18 in the 20th minute for the Highlanders' first shot of the night.
Elliott made her second save in the 28th minute at the near post. UC Riverside shortly after turned away a free kick, a pair of corners, and overall heavy pressure in the final third.
Sanaa Guyness held down the back line late in the first half. The senior exercised damage control as the intermission approached, playing balls back to Elliott and breaking up otherwise viable scoring opportunities.
UCR forced a header just wide in the 47th minute, being tested off the opening kickoff for the second time on a hot night. Guyness returned to last defense mode in the 49th after an ORU attacker found herself in open space between her and Elliott.
A 56th minute Aghassi free kick into the box set into motion UCR's most promising spell of possession inside the final third. The Thousand Oaks native went for goal on a second free kick in the 58th before ORU broke the deadlock in the 59th.
Albertine Faye won a free kick in the 60th minute to put Aghassi over the ball once more, but her attempt went into the wall.
UCR kept the deficit at a minimum in the 67th minute. ORU played a ball into the box and worked its way closer to goal, but an errant extra pass allowed the Highlanders to clear.
UC Riverside had eyes for late drama, winning its second corner in the 84th minute. Mia DiLeo swung the ball in and connected with a defender, who deflected it back to Guyness, but the senior sent the connection over the crossbar. UCR peppered the ball around into the box in the 86th but was called offside.
A costly mishandle from Oral Roberts allowed UCR one last chance. DiLeo pressed into the final third and unluckily sent one off the crossbar in the 87th minute, narrowly missing out on the late equalizer.
The Highlanders recorded three of their four shots after halftime, including two in the final six minutes.
UC Riverside will finish the road trip on Sunday, August 23, at Kansas City. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am PT on the Summit League Network.
