UC Riverside 3, Hawai'i 2 - Box Score
Riverside—Freshman Renee Scachetti scored her first collegiate goal with less than two minutes remaining to cap a UC Riverside comeback as the Highlanders used three second half goals to defeat the University of Hawai'i 3-2 at the Lower Fields on Sunday.
With time winding down, Erika Bligh fed Scachetti who drilled a 20-foot line drive that hit the cross bar and fell into the net behind goalie Jennifer Churchill to break a 2-2 tie. The win was the first of the season for UCR (1-3). The Rainbow Wahine fall to 1-2-1.
Hawai'i jumped out to an early lead when Natalie Groenewoud hit a 25-foot shot that was just out of the reach of Highlander goalie Kristen Cocks for a 1-0 Hawaii advantage.
At the 70 minute mark, UCR knotted the game when freshman Lisa Jensen took a cross pass from Kelly Hurley and beat Churchill to the right post. The goal was Jensen's first of her career, and ended a 326 minute scoreless drought for UC Riverside.
Six minutes later, Hawai'i regained the advantage when Krystalynn Ontai's corner kick deflected off of a UCR defenseman and into the Highlander net, and Hawaii led 2-1.
UCR tied the game six minutes later when Jessica Armel took a pass from Kristi Tanaka and found herself all alone against Churchill and beat her to the right post to tie the game at two apiece, setting up Scachetti's heroics. UCR out-shot Hawaii 23-18.
"I am extremely proud of the efforts of my girls today, " commented Head Coach Veronica O'Brien, "We made an adjustment to attack on offense. I am glad to see that we took that aggressive mentality."
The Highlanders return to action on Friday, as they travel to Nevada for the Nevada Tournament. Game time is at 5:30 pm.
