Women's Soccer Drop 1-0 Decision To UC Irvine In Overtime
11/1/2003 3:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Irvine 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside women’s soccer team played visiting UC Irvine tough through regulation, but lost in the first overtime period, 1-0, on a goal that just found its way into the net Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Anteaters (10-3-5, 4-1-3 Big West) got their goal from Lindsay Duke five minutes into the overtime period that was set up off a free kick. The ball was fed to Duke from Britney Webster who managed to get a bit of control on the ball around the UCR goal box and then got it to Duke who headed it just past the reach of netminder Tawny Poggio.
Both teams had a few prime opportunities to break the scoreless tie and most likely the momentum of the match.
The Highlanders (10-6-3, 4-3-1 Big West) missed the opportunity to take the lead in the 69th minute on a header by Kelly Ferguson that sailed just wide of the net.
UCI had a shot that nailed the crossbar on the 79th minute on a shot from Hayley McNallan. After a corner kick and a save by Poggio, McNallan’s sent what looked like a sure-goal shot at the net, only to find metal.
Riverside may have had its best shot at a goal with just over six minutes remaining in the second half. Allison Stone drove the ball down the right side of the penalty box and sent a sweet slide pass to a charging Linda Allen who looked as if she had the keeper beat, but her shot went just wide across the mouth of the goal.
With time running out in regulation, UC Irvine attacked the Highlanders’ net, but had two quick shots blocked.
UC Riverside had a slight 15-12 advantage in shots and both teams had five shots on goal in the match.
The Anteaters were able to get five corner kicks compared to the Highlanders one.
With Big West Tournament implications with the match, the winner of this game would most likely be one of the four top teams in the conference and earn a berth in the tournament with hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The win gives UC Irvine sole possession of third place in the conference and drops UC Riverside to fourth place. The top two teams, Cal Poly and Utah State square off Friday at 5:00 p.m. and fifth place Long Beach State faces Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 p.m.
The Highlanders close out the 2003 season schedule in a must-win game at home on Sunday against Long Beach to still have a chance to make the tournament. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
