2/4/2003 8:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Long Beach, CA—UC Riverside's defense held Long Beach State to 38.2 percent shooting from the field, and Aaron Hands posted an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Highlanders held on for a 68-65 win at The Beach (box score).
Neither team led by more than six points on the night, and the game saw 14 ties and a dozen lead changes.
The Highlanders trailed by four with 9:21 left in the game, but a Klaus Schille lay up and a pair of Nate Carter free throw tied the score. Four possessions later, the score was still tied, 58-58.
Hands scored the next five points for UC Riverside to put the Highlanders up 63-58. Over the final 4:40 UCR forced Long Beach State into five missed shots, two turnovers and two missed free throws, while the Highlanders scored their final five points from the charity stripe.
Schille and Carter each led the Highlanders with 12 points each.
The 49ers relied on three scorers on the evening—Tony Darden (19), Vance Lawhorn (17) and Kevin Roberts (16). Darden's points came off the bench, and Roberts added 12 boards for a double-double. That trio was 18 for 38 from the field, while the remainder of the roster made just three of 17 shots.
