9/6/2003 3:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 1, Gonzaga 0 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside women's soccer team fought to a 1-0 win over the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs Friday afternoon in near 100-degree weather at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
After a tough back-and-forth match through the first 84 minutes, sophomore midfielder Renee Scachetti was able to corral a ball and skip it past Gonzaga keeper Ashley Haugen at the 84:58 mark. The Highlanders were able to beat the defense, pulling the goalie out of position, but UCR was unable to get control to take a clean shot until Scachetti's shot.
"I only have one thing to say," said UC Riverside head coach Veronica O'Brien. "Great team effort and attacking mentality."
Freshman Tawny Poggio was outstanding in her first start in net making 13 saves, including some tough shots from the Zags' offense.
The Highlanders had several solid scoring opportunities earlier in the game, but were unable to take advantage of the situations.
The win improves UC Riverside's record to 2-1 while Gonzaga drops to 1-1 on the season.
The Highlanders continue their three-game home stand with a Monday afternoon match against the Wahine of Hawaii at the UCR Soccer Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m.
