UC Riverside 2, Hawai'i 2 (2OT) - Box Score
Riverside—Trailing 2-0 after the first 30 minutes of play to the University of Hawaii, the UC Riverside women's soccer team managed to add goals in the first and second periods to tie the game and send it to overtime where it ended, 2-2, after double-overtime Monday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-1-1) took just over 11 minutes to get on board after sophomore Natasha Kai sped by the UCR defense and powered the ball past the keeper to take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Kai's goal was set up by Natalie Groenwoud and Arlene Devitt who were both credited with assists.
In the 27th minute, Arlene Devitt was able to drill the ball to the upper right corner, just over the reach of UCR goalkeeper Tawny Poggio to take a 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders (2-1-1) looked as if Hawaii would race away with the win, but the team's fortune changed in the 37th minute when freshman Kelly Ferguson was able to beat the Wahine defense and find the net minutes after entering the game as a substitute, cutting Hawaii's lead in half, 2-1.
UCR was able to tie the game up, 2-2, on junior Kristi Tanaka's team-leading third goal of the season in the 64th minute. Tanaka was able to deflect the ball off the goalkeeper's hands and she drove the ball to the lower-left side of the goal on a free kick.
Neither team would score through the end of regulation and through two overtime periods.
UCR led Hawaii, 30-21, in the shot department, but were able to get just 10 on goal.
Poggio allowed two goals and made nine saves compared to Hawaii's Mahie Atay who allowed two goals and made eight saves.
The Highlanders look to wrap up this three game home stand and remain undefeated at home on Friday when they host Long Island University at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
