
Women’s Soccer Improves To 3-1-1 With 4-0 Shut Out Of Long Island

Riverside—The UC Riverside women’s soccer team shut out visiting Long Island University, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The Highlanders were credited with two goals in each half.
The Highlanders (3-1-1) were put on the board early when the Blackbirds’ (1-3) defense knocked the ball in their own net and were charged with an own goal giving UCR a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
It wasn’t until late in the first period when UCR’s Lindsay Hellman scored the first goal for the Highlanders’ offense on a shot that deflected off the keepers’ hands in the 42nd minute to put UCR up 2-0 heading into the break.
In the second half, Vanessa Chanez was able to take a header from Danica Pomerenck and head it herself past LIU’s goalkeeper in the 76th minute to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.
Kim Furnald added the final goal of the game heading a bullet into the lower-right corner of the net off a cross from the left side from Linda Allen.
UCR out shot the Blackbirds, 15-4, with Stephanie Kansky making four saves for the Blackbirds and Tawny Poggio, who played just the first half, making three saves for UCR.
The Highlanders hit the road for two games, heading to San Jose State on Monday, September 15, and Fresno State on Wednesday, September 17. UCR returns home to host Portland State on Sunday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
